As much as you look into a mirror you cannot really change what you see and as I made every decision without looking back I have to trust that they are all for the best....they will all lead in the right and good direction. Day three with Carly Simon brought another night of her blissfully sleeping in my bed and not moving until about 4am which wasn't so bad. It also brought another morning of her eating and trying to get in my lap and beg me not to leave. I once again crated her and shut the bathroom doors. Where would she be 8 hours later.....
Turns out she had escaped the crate, but not the bathroom. She had however jumped leaps and bounds to reach a silk tank and I found tiny black fur on the bathroom counter. I had Houdini and Michael Jordan all rolled into one. I was also minus a shirt.

Crate-trained, my ass. My second day with Carly I had to go to work. I really question why companies don't offer "puppy leave." I felt so bad for her, but what was I to do? I sat nervously at work a good 5 and a half hours before leaving early to care for my new child. I got home...opened the door and heard a jingle. A dog collar jingle. I walked up the stairs and saw MY DOG standing in the living room quite content with herself and apparently mocking me. The same dog I had left in her crate in the bathroom with the doors shut was now out. How did she do it? I still do not know and I seriously considered investing in a webcam. What was she going to do next? And wow, did I have my hands full!

Yep, you guessed it I got a dog. A mangy little mut. I put a deposit on the little Chihuahua for 24 hours and ended up going back the day before Valentine's to make her mine. I knew I had wanted a dog for more than four years and this little pooch had stolen my heart. No doubt it was going to be a huge responsibility, but not one I could not handle. So I did it....for better or worse.

The two words I thought I'd never see or hear. Track pants.....bloody track pants.

Certainly I have had blind dates before...one my cousin set up and the other my high school principal found me. I should have learned by now to just say no (no how and no way)! Apparently I am a sucker for a bad date so I agreed to meet the friend's younger and completely fabulous brother. So to recap he was not fabulous and not that much of a gentleman. Note to self--never trust a family member. The first contact we had was an extremely poorly worded email that went something like this:

Yooooooo. So and sos brother here. I'm sure your wide open but I was going to
see if you wanted to get dinner this week.

I was utterly flabbergasted but responded five hours later confirming the fact I had a horribly busy schedule and would be unable to accommodate him that week. He apologized for the extremely rude and poorly worded email, but what else was he supposed to say? He calls me the next week and I agree to dinner. Mistake one.

Date 1:

Average Joe shows up slightly late, apologizes. We shake hands and proceed to his car....a silver Beemer. Right off the bat, I knew this was a bad sign. The date continued on to an upscale Mexican place (oxymoron and I don't like Mex that much). We waited for what seemed like ages and exchanged casualties with a guy he knew. Thankfully we got a table and were able to awkwardly talk our way through dinner. Nothing too bad and not horrible as far as first dates go. Overall a 5 out of 10, but this was definitely not the guy for me and he was ~~a little~~ a lot immature for 34.

Date 2:
Yes, I opted to subject myself to more blind date torture. I got a text from Average Joe asking if I wanted to grab lunch the following week. Thankfully or not so thankfully I had training and meetings all week that conveniently wiped out my lunch hour so I politely declined. He then asked me to dinner. I guessed it wouldn't go horribly, but oh how it did. I had not heard from him since Monday and I received a text Thursday at 2 pm that went something like this:

How's training? Great, how's your day? Just living the
dream. Pick you up at 7.

Really I didn't know anyone else that was living the dream other than Tom Cruise or Matthew Mcconaughey and his L-I-V-I-N. I thought about saying I've got other plans, but I acquiesced. Was he there at 7? No--7:30pm.....I swung open my door and had to lift my mouth off the floor and resist the urge to look like a deer in the headlights. Average Joe was wearing TRACK PANTS.....nylon track pants. I was completely astonished wondering if anyone even owned those anymore. Had he come from a pickup basketball game or did he actually think this was stylish? Either way it was disturbing. We got in his car and he muttered that he didn't really have a plan, which was completely disrespectful as far as second dates go. He tried to suggest basically the Shoney's of sushi but we ended up at P.F. Chang's (like that was better). The date was a train wreck....

I have yet to recover from the bad food, disrespect and more importantly bad pants. Any of these things individually would have been problem, but the pants took the cake. For fear date three holds a Member's Only jacket I am walking away. Other girl's get engaged, get married and get flowers; I get track pants.

There is never a good time to have kids or move and I did just that....or both of "thats." I changed cities and jobs in a matter of a few weeks and have found myself adjusting well to my new situation (shockingly).

I guess a part of me thought I had it too easy and after lusting over my coworkers adopted puppies and perusing the company classifieds I was, in fact, dog crazy. I found one online but the dog came with issues, a moody owner and apparently the desire to ~~piss his life away~~ mark everything in sight. Next idea....only look at girl dogs. I jumped to the humane society's web page and found several adult dog options. One was a terrier and the other was a Chihuahua mix. I never thought I would consider a Taco Bell dog, but a few days later there I sat at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society filling out paper work. Who knew you couldn't pet dogs until you had signed your life away? (Must be part of the gimmick..by the time you fill out paper work and wait an hour and a half you might as well get a dog).
Did they bother to tell me you could only see three dogs in a day? Nope. Well I had to pick three...I found the little nacho cheese dog I had called about. Pros: Housebroken (possibly), crate trained, 3 years old. Cons: She had been knocked up, she was a Chihuahua, she might have separation anxiety, did I mention she was a Chihuahua? I had waited nearly two hours and I was finally going to see her. Immediately she was shaking in my arms. Great...what's next peeing? I held her and let her wander around. She seemed to be holding on for dear life. I played with her to the best of my ability. She felt so tiny and so very frightened. I let the handler take her back and asked about the terrier. She was eight or nine and not remotely house broken. I vetoed. Sadly I had seen a St. Bernard and fallen in love. I asked to see her knowing that there was no way in hell I could have that beast, but she was the gentlest giant sitting and staying on command. She did slobber and shed enough to plaster my jeans in a thick coating of spit and fur. Gross, but true...so maybe the little chi-wow-wow was for me.

The snow was bittersweet. A part of me was concerned about a lack of power. A part of me was concerned about the unknown. A part of me felt very alone. A part of me had no idea what to expect. I grocery shopped, located flash lights, charged multiple cell phones, and braced myself.
The snow came down falling against the night sky and it was wonderful. I immediately threw on boots and ran out to witness the beauty. I stayed home for two days and avoided the frosty/slushy mess....it was gorgeous and I now wish for snow every day!

Congrats to me, I did it again. I moved. I think I should make it a recurring thing every couple of years to mix things up a bit. Don't get me wrong I wanted the change...new job...new challenges, but I must admit that I have city love for the place I spent three and a half years in. It is impossible to fathom that I blindly moved to a new place and made lasting friendships that I almost couldn't bear leaving, but no one ever accused me of having a lack of guts and I am off to do it again.Here's to a new year, new city and new possibilities....and here's to hoping for more city love.

Ahh the perils of moving are enough to rattle even the thickest skin. Some lessons learned:

Even after throwing out crap I still had unforeseen amounts of junk
Spending three days with total strangers can make even the unlikeliest people friends {hence my relationship with my movers}
Eventually you do run out of room in the living room for moving boxes
Packed boxes take up less space than unpacked boxes and yes, there can be a single lamp shade in a five foot tall box
Let the movers unpack mirrors.....the paper is a bi***
You do not have to have food in your house to eat
You can sleep several nights on your bed without sheets {due to the fact you cannot find your sheets}
Pray you don't have to start work two days after your stuff arrives
Moving states you might as well be crossing enemy lines when it comes to car tags and titles
When it comes to draperies, measure twice and cut once
Don't weather strip your door and deadbolt the other door
Schedule the cable two weeks in advance lest you want to be tv-less
Don't live downtown, near train tracks or in an uber cool loft lest you want to fight the homeless
Don't leave electronics in your car
Hide your kids, hide your wife......

A well-appointed table is a necessity and thanks to my movers I was informed that I have more kitchen ~~crap~~ things than the average bear. I have plates and silverware but according to my mum I needed napkins and such so I would not mar the antique table....and if you give this mouse a cookie she will ask for a glass of milk. I got napkins and such and am now craving more plates, glasses and napkin rings. I found these unconventional lovelies courtesy of etsy. Whatcha think? Maybe not formal enough but enjoyable.

Only in Orlando....I have had an eventful journey to the land of Mickey and Minnie starting in my hometown. I arrived at the airport an hour early only to get stripped down. "M'am can you remove your scarf, your sweater." I was quite frankly waiting on them to ask me to remove my leggings. The creepy old man behind me kept laughing as I removed layer upon layer....and turns out he had a questionable gold bag that the TSA officials thought was mine. I quickly informed them it was not...thankfully I made it through the scan, humbled by the fact I was standing in a tee and leggings. I sat down relieved only to find I was sitting next to chatty Cathy. A lovely lady was sitting next to me and began talking in a thick European accent. She began telling me about her visit of forty days to Alabama and the fact that she had plans to visit Romania where she was from....she then proceeded to tell me she lived "a few miles from Dracula..." but quickly informed me she was not, in fact, a vampire. Relieved that the plane would not go up in fangs I rapidly boarded. Waiting patiently in my aisle seat but who to my wondering eyes did appear but GOLD BAG man.....he plopped down between me and another lady.

The plane slowly took off but not before the man lit up his electric cigarette. Little did I know these things existed, or that they were legal on aero-planes. Curiosity killed the cat and I quizzed him on the mechanics of an e-cig. He explained that you filled it with tobacco and it vaporized. Ummm he was smoking 'baccer on the plane. No, I frankly did not want to smell it, but I did not want to anger anyone with nicotine withdrawals so I kept my mouth shut and perused my Vogue. The man started reading my articles and peering at the scantily clad models so I closed the mag and pulled out my ipod. No dice. He wanted to know what I was listening to and decided to share a little Bocephus and his geriatric headset with me. It was "tear-makin'" music, as he put it. He also asked if I liked gamblin' and instead of bore him with the finer points of my statistical knowledge I laughed and said I didn't care for it. Thankfully I was quickly in Atlanta....standing up I joined the conversation in front of me only to find the gentleman in front of me was headed to Orlando. Score! I was saved from the vamp and e-smoker.

Turns out he we had a mutual connection. Deep in discussion we boarded the tram to the next concourse, I lost him and was in dreamland when I saw him jump back on the tram...."M'am are you supposed to get off." "Yes!!" I said frantically. I had nearly missed my exit thanks to my lack of a sense of direction and ability to lose my head without it being attached. We sat and waited on the next plane.

Next stop Orlando...."1,2,3 GO!" were the words I heard coming from the couple next to me. Apparently they were the reigning Suduko champs and were having competitive Suduko matches. I buried my head in a good book to tune it out, and an hour plane ride later I touched down and managed to board the appropriate tram by solo and make it to baggage claim. Shortly after I hailed a cab...turns out the cabby had Alabama roots and proceeded to give me his family tree that included moon-shiners from Auburn....half an hour later I arrived safe and sound to my hotel and it's been uneventful since....kind of makes me miss the traveling fun.

There is something refreshing about animals. Much like children there is always positivity and love. There is never negativity. Even if you are having your worst day, your lowest an animal can bring you to your senses....or at least lick you to your senses (not to mention your tears away!). This is my parents' new pups and I want her now more than ever. I named her Annie in honor of little orphan Annie since she was a stray. She is a Doberman, and my little rock star pup. Annie, you're okay.....you're okay, Annie. You're a smooth criminal....just try not to munch on shoes...

Today Gilt featured the amazing Ace Hotel in NYC. This hipster hotel features urban style with some serious thrift store finds (a Hubble telescope chandelier) and curious collectibles (stuffed badgers-think Hollister Hovey). The hotel is decorated with original art installations. I think I need a vacay, stat!

After the past week, I feel like toast....or at least that my brain is ~~toasted~~ fried. I am in a serious need of a change in life and on my toes. Like I say when the going gets tough, the tough repaint their toe nails. I found the perfect shade to lure me away from OPI's Lincoln Park after Dark. Toast, by RGB. I highly recommend getting toasted....

I crawled onto the high seas as I embarked on my first sailing trip this Sunday. Nervous does not begin to describe how I felt. Initially I was psyched to go sailing...but then as I stood in my cutoff shorts staring at the tiny boat I became greatly concerned. "It does not have a motor." That was all I could say...then the next thing out of my blunt mouth was, "It is basically a canoe with a sail." Granted I should have considered the physics of the situation, tiny boat...pulled by wind....could tip over. I had not given any of this any thought, I only saw the opportunity for a new experience as I took my first sailing trip on Sunday. We nearly tipped the boat a few times, but I wasn't worry about getting wet; I was worried about my phone and camera taking a plunge. Note to self: when taking out a small sail boat carry nothing on board unless you have waterproof containers. The overall experience was good. Although I think I freaked out my boat captain with my ~~severe lack of enthusiasm~~ fear! Good day though....I make an excellent first mate!

Does electronic mail make dating a little less painful? It certainly seems like it (for Dudes at least). I was just asked out via email....I am going to blame it on the fact that the guy possibly lost my number and had not talked to me in a while. I guess saying no would have been uneventful enough: I could have a. deleted the email, b. politely declined, c. claimed to have never received it (darn company firewalls), or d. responded nastily.....but I accepted graciously. It was harmless enough. We'll see how the date Saturday goes...I think it could be funny enough to write home about......

I purchased Halloween cupcake wrappers and am ready to hang lights....only a few more months, but in the meantime I am holiday browsing. How amazing are these wreaths from Horchow?

Movies for a Monday. I have been in love with Katie Holmes and design collaborations ever since Dawson's Creek met American Eagle and J.Crew....well they have done it again. Based on the book by Galt Neiderhoffer, The Romantics, is the the story of a group of friends with an incestuous dating history that reunite for a wedding and you can only guess what happens. Another chick flick, but less sappy....and what's not to love about Katie, Josh, Anna, Adam, Elijah, and Malin. A must see in my book!....to their glittering future.
